All through the mouth. Music played in the background. About 15 minutes into this breathing, my face started to tingle, then quickly followed by my hands, arms, and pretty much my whole body. I started sweating profusely. Emotionally, I felt euphoric yet with a sprinkling of fear given that my whole body was tingling, literally paralyzed. I was hallucinating as if I had taken serious drugs.

I have never experienced anything close to this feeling. There were moments where it took all my strength not to break out laughing, and others not to cry. When Brigitte weaned us off the breathing patterns, I had completely sweated through my shirt and pants. Out of the 20 or so participants, it took me by far the longest to finally sit up. As I exited the studio, I stared at the river behind the studio still in recovery mode. When I finally spoke, I looked at my wife and asked: “What the hell was that?” She said, “Yeah, I was worried about you.”

The rest of the day I felt relaxed, calm, and clear. Any worries had dissipated. Harvard Health explains that controlled breathing techniques activate the parasympathetic nervous system, counteracting the chronic fight-or-flight state many finance professionals live in daily.

The Science Behind Holotropic Breathwork for Stress Relief

Holotropic breathwork was developed by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof as a non-pharmacological alternative to altered states of consciousness. It combines accelerated breathing, evocative music, and bodywork to facilitate deep psychological healing. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology documents significant reductions in anxiety and improvements in wellbeing following holotropic breathwork sessions.

The physiological mechanism involves controlled hyperventilation, which alters CO2 levels in the blood, causing vasoconstriction and the tingling/altered states experienced. Mayo Clinic’s breathing research confirms that breathing patterns directly modulate stress hormones including cortisol and adrenaline — the same hormones that plague high-performing professionals in demanding environments.

For bankers and finance professionals dealing with chronic stress, holotropic breathwork for stress relief offers a way to process accumulated emotional tension that conventional wellness approaches simply can’t reach. It’s what my acupuncturist called “moving stagnant energy” — and what the research calls “emotional processing and integration.”

Should Finance Professionals Try Holotropic Breathwork for Stress Relief?

While I reflect on the experience with very positive emotions, my acupuncturist noted that this technique is usually completed during advanced meditation practice. If done too early, it can bring up potentially difficult emotions the practitioner isn’t ready to process. He compared a poorly-guided session to a bad psychedelic experience — hence the phone/email distribution at the beginning of the class.
